The Monsters' Monster by Patrick McDonnell, published Dark fantasy/science fiction. Picture book. Pre-K to grade 2. Found via Library Media Connection, reviewed by Shiela Martina Keaise. Three little monsters are busy worrying about who's the scariest, complete with tantrums and fights/5. James King - A black man who is also young, but older than Steve, he encourages Steve to be a part of his “crew” which will rob the drugstore. He is accused of being in the drugstore, wrestling Mr. Nesbitt for the gun, and ultimately shooting the older man to death. Steve's mom, dad, and brother, Jerry, are the home team, cheering Steve on no matter how bad it gets. But not all fans are the same. Mrs. HarmonMama is the die-hard fan. The book opens with a warning from our narrator not to let anybody hear you crying cry at night. Seriously—if you do, you're gonna be a bloody pulp the next time it's light out. I think that 10 is a good age to learn this positive message! Of course violence is part of "Monster;" the story is about a young teenager on trial for aiding in a 5/5. What the journal entries reveal is a young man fearful that he will face the electric chair; he shows no signs of being the “monster” the prosecutor is attempting to portray him to be. Furthermore, flashbacks show Steve’s interest in film studies ; he is a member of a film club, and he contends that on the day of the robbery, he was.
